Writers Bridge

No writer is an island with Writers Bridge...

No writer is an island with Writers Bridge...

Writers Bridge LogoOnce upon a time there were tiny islands, each occupied by a single freelance writer. Meanwhile, across a vast gulf of miscommunication, other islands were home to editors and groups of editors…

One way to bridge the waters that lie between freelance writers and editors is to join a group that focuses on bridging that gap. This group, comprised of freelance writers and editors, is set up for marketing help, peer editing and collaboration among members. They’ve developed an “Idea Bank” with thousands of potential jumping-off points for articles and essays, and writers who contribute include beginning writers, published freelancers who would like to be more successful and writers who have already carved out a profitable career.

But this group isn’t just about writers. Editors, too, have been burned, aggravated and frustrated by the freelance marketplace as it currently exists. Darrell Laurent, creator of the Writers Bridge, knows about this frustration, having edited a magazine. He also has heard editorial horror stories of freelancers not completing assignments, turning in copy that had to be virtually rewritten and/or not submitting the same story that was agreed upon. Moreover, the proliferation of writers on the planet today has left many magazines and Web sites overwhelmed by the barrage of queries and submissions.

Each member within this group is treated individually, in accordance with his or her unique experiences and aspirations. Writers Bridge membership is drawn from almost every U.S. state and more than a dozen other countries. As a member of this group you receive:

  1. Daily “FYI” e-mails listing writing jobs gleaned from a variety of sources.
  2. E-mails sent specifically to you, if a job seems to fit your geographic area or area of interest.
  3. When you send in an idea (with a current focus on non-fiction), the Writers Bridge can find at least three markets from their database for that idea. They also work with you on your query letter, and track it after it’s sent.
  4. Writers Bridge has set up Google alerts tailored to you, and they will contact you if they find an idea that seems like a good fit.
  5. If you get a “bite” from a magazine or Web site, Writers Bridge offer to edit your article before it goes out.
  6. You also receive periodic “Idea Bank” e-mails listing dozens of ideas that can be applicable anywhere.

Darrell Laurent is a well-known name in Lynchburg, Virginia and beyond for his writing skills. He is an award-winning columnist at the Lynchburg News & Advance, where he has written the paper’s lead column for more than two decades. Additionally, Darrell is the inspiration for the first LaGrange Writers’ Seminar, as this seminar is modeled after one that he conducted in Bedford County, Virginia in spring 2009.

Thank you for that inspiration, Darrell – we want people to know that you pass on that inspiration to all the Writers Bridge members as well.

LaGrange Writers’ Seminar

Library lobby

The Writers' Seminar that was held at the Oldham Public Library in LaGrange, KY was a HUGE success, thanks to the authors and to those who attended both the Friday and Saturday programs. See the photos!

A big thank-you to James Daniel Ross, Thomas Freese, Lynn Tincher, Keith Gaddy Davis and Elizabeth Bevarly for donating their time to attend this event. Another big thank you to Susan Eubank at the library, Karen at Karen's Book Barn and to Delizie Italiane for making this even SO easy. The food was great, the atmosphere was stunning, and the knowledge was priceless.
